How to start a conversation online
Say hello, choose a topic someone can answer without revealing personal details, and ask one question. Add a short answer of your own if it helps explain why you chose that topic. Then wait for a reply before asking anything else.
For example: “Hi! What is your go-to snack for a movie night? I usually make popcorn and add too much seasoning.” This gives the other person something concrete to answer or react to. You do not need an impressive story, an intimate question, or a perfectly polished introduction.
Choose a conversation starter that sounds like you
Ask one question you would enjoy answering. Add a short answer of your own, then wait. Use the suggested follow-up only if it fits their reply.
Easy everyday topics
-
Something worth watching. “Hi! What's a movie or show you'd happily watch again?”
Follow-up: “What makes it worth a second watch?” Share your own comfort watch, too.
-
A good part of the week. “What's been a good part of your week?”
Follow-up: “Was that planned, or a nice surprise?” Let them choose how much to share.
-
A favorite snack. “What's your go-to late-night snack?”
Follow-up: “Do you make it yourself, or is it ready to eat?” A small preference is enough to start with.
-
A free hour. “If you had an hour with nothing to do, how would you spend it?”
Follow-up: “Is that how you usually relax?” Keep it hypothetical; there is no need to ask about their schedule.
Questions about shared interests
-
A song on repeat. “What song have you had on repeat lately?”
Follow-up: “Is that your usual kind of music?” A genre is a fine answer if no song comes to mind.
-
Something to learn. “What skill would you like to learn just for fun?”
Follow-up: “What would you try making or doing first?” Offer your own idea, without turning it into a discussion of life goals.
-
A surprising discovery. “What's something interesting you learned recently?”
Follow-up: “Where did you hear about it?” A book, video, podcast, or everyday observation can give you another topic.
-
A game worth playing. “What game is fun even when you lose?”
Follow-up: “What keeps you coming back to it?” If games are not their thing, choose another interest.
Playful questions when the mood fits
-
Weekend style. “Would you rather plan your whole weekend or see what happens?”
Follow-up: “Does that change after a busy week?” Be curious about a different answer instead of debating it.
-
An afternoon project. “If you had an afternoon to make something, what would you choose?”
Follow-up: “Would you follow instructions or figure it out as you go?” Cooking, drawing, fixing, and building all count.
-
An underrated favorite. “What's something small you think deserves more appreciation?”
Follow-up: “What made you a fan?” Your answer can be as simple as a good pen or a favorite sandwich.
-
A shop for a day. “If you ran a tiny shop for one day, what would you sell?”
Follow-up: “What would you call it?” Try your own silly answer if the conversation already feels playful.
Make the first message sound like you
Use these examples as starting points. Shorten a question you would never normally say, and add one honest detail: “I keep trying to learn guitar. What would you learn just for fun?”
If their profile mentions an interest, connect your question to that interest without assuming how much they know about it. Keep your own answer brief enough to leave room for theirs. You are opening a conversation, not filling out a questionnaire.
An example first conversation
In this fictional exchange, each message responds to something the other person said:
Person A: “Hi! What small skill would you learn for fun? I would like to draw something other than a stick figure.”
Person B: “Bread making, probably.”
Person A: “What kind would you try first? I would be tempted by anything with olives.”
Person B: “Focaccia. Mostly for the toppings.”
Person A: “That makes sense. Picking the toppings sounds like the best part.”
What if the reply is short, or there is no reply?
A short reply gives you little context. Respond to the detail they offered, share something of your own, and leave space for them to take a turn. You do not need to rescue every pause with another question.
If they do not reply, give them time. Avoid repeated greetings or asking why they are ignoring you. If the conversation does not continue, move on without treating it as a verdict on your opener. If they say they do not want to chat, respect that.
Keep first questions comfortable
Ask about interests before identifying details. Leave out requests for a phone number, workplace, exact location, private photos, or personal history. You can decline a question yourself: “I would rather keep that private, but I am happy to talk about music.”
